Mercury retrograde is the phenomenon that occurs when the planet Mercury appears to be moving backwards in the sky.
Bizarrely, the astral body comes to a stop and then begins to move backwards.
It’s as if someone pulled the emergency brake on December 1st, bringing Mercury’s forward motion to a sudden halt.
Now, the planet appears to be moving backwards, and it won’t regain its forward momentum until December 15th.
In astrology, Mercury is associated with communication, travel, and technology.
Coincidentally, this Mercury retrograde period coincided with the lunar cycle, beginning on the new moon of December 1st.
When Mercury is in retrograde, it is believed to have an impact on these areas of life, often causing delays, miscommunications, and technical issues.
This alignment with the new/full moon cycle seems to amply the themes of introspection and reassessment.
We’re still in the midst of this retrograde, with Mercury not regaining its forward momentum until December 15th, the day of the full moon.
And I hate to believe in this stuff but it seems that momentum and progress does slow down or reverse during this time.
It’s as if the planet’s apparent backward motion creates a kind of energetic drag, holding back the forward-moving energy that normally propels us forward. This can manifest as feeling stuck, experiencing delays, or encountering setbacks.
By embracing that Mercury would slow me down, I’ve been able to approach the retrograded challenges with patience and humor.
Despite the roadblocks, I was still able to accomplish a significant amount by not letting it get to me.
I also gave myself permission to take it easy and to spend plenty of time outdoors getting fresh air and sunlight.
By avoiding the urge to rush into ventures and instead opting for a more relaxed pace, I’ve been able to achieve quite a bit while learning patience and acceptance.
